Renowned journalist and lawyer Richard Dela Sky has argued that Speakers of Parliament have no constitutional power to declare the seats of sitting Members of Parliament(MPs) vacant because they have joined a different political party or have gone independent, asserting that declaring parliamentary seats vacant for such reasons amount to a constitutional reach on the part of Speakers of Parliament.
Mr Sky explained that it is rather the High Court that can declare parliamentary seats vacant.
He contended that Speaker Alban Bagbin's declaration of four parliamentary seats vacant yesterday must not be allowed to stand because the act is unconstitutional and that it is a threat to the rights of elected representatives.
