While mining remains an important part of Ghana's economy however it must be carried out responsibly and sustainably, the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra has said.
To that end, they have called on licensed mining companies to adhere strictly to environmental regulations and to adopt practices that protect the environment.
The Bishops noted that many of those engaged in illegal mining (Galamseny) do so out of economic desperation.
They have therefore urged the government to invest in alternative livelihood programmes that provide sustainable employment opportunities for these individuals, particularly in the agricultural sector. "Many of those engaged in illegal mining do so out of economic desperation.
