The General Agricultural Workers' Union (GAWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has announced to its members to stay away from work in accordance with the directives issued by Organised Labour in the quest to have the government clamp down on activities of illegal mining.
Activities of illegal mining has in recent times, caused an alarming destruction to Ghana's forest reserves and water bodies which is currently having adverse impact on the living conditions of persons who depend on the various water bodies as their source of livelihood.
Organised Labour have issued notices to its members to embark on a nationwide strike following government's inability to declare a state of emergency on the fight against galamsey.
In view of the directives by Organised Labour, GAWU has in a letter dated, October 9, 2024, urged its members to stay off work until the government declares a state of emergency on the activities of galamsey.The fight against galamsey has been a surge with other members of the Organsied Labour calling on their members to join in the fight.
