Independent Presidential Candidate, George Twum-Barimah-Adu has stressed that no mother and her newborn baby should be detained in hospital for non-payment of their medical bills.

During his address at the launch of the Mother and Child Care Fund by the Ghana Women Awards Foundation (GWAF) at the Accra International Conference Center on Sunday 6th October 2024, he expressed worry about the growing statistics of how some mothers and their newborn babies are detained in hospitals over unpaid medical bills after delivery.

Twum-Barimah-Adu maintained that it is not just an economic situation, but a human rights issue and that no woman should be detained after giving birth and no child should start life under such hardship. "We must ensure that every mother regardless of where she lives, or her financial status has access to health care.
