The Graduate Students' Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has announced its intention to solidarise and join the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra to protest against illegal mining on Friday, October 11.
GRASAG in a statement dated October 7, bemoaned the impacts of the illegal mining menace popularly known as galamsey and indicated it will join the "Catholic Church in calling for stronger actions from the government, civil society, and all stakeholders to protect Ghana's lands, water bodies, and natural resources from further destruction." An October 4 press statement issued by the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra indicated that it would partner with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious, Ghana, and Catholic Lay Faithful and Professionals, to lead an Environmental Prayer Protest Walk Against Galamsey.
The church stressed that the protest is aimed at raising awareness about the negative and destructive effects of galamsey and to demand urgent action from the government to end the menace.
GRASAG's statement also synced with the Church's and urged all "Ghanaians to participate in this peaceful demonstration to amplify the call for immediate and effective measures to combat illegal mining." Below is GRASAG's full statement.
