The government has announced its intention to revoke the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations, 2023 (L.I. 2462) when Parliament reconvenes this month.
This move is part of its broader strategy to intensify enforcement measures against illegal mining, particularly in water bodies and forest reserves, which remain designated "Red Zones" where all forms of mining are prohibited.
According to the government's statement signed by Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar on Monday, October 7, disclosed that law enforcement agencies have been fully empowered to eliminate illegal mining in these protected areas.
The statement also revealed that the Attorney-General will collaborate with the Chief Justice to ensure that cases involving illegal mining are adjudicated swiftly, reinforcing the government's resolve to curb this destructive practice.
