The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in collaboration with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious, Ghana, and the Catholic Lay Faithful and Professionals, has disclosed that it will embarking on an Environmental Prayer Protest Walk Against Galamsey on Friday, 11th October 2024.
The organisation said this is to demonstrate its stance against the devastating effects of galamsey (illegal mining) in Ghana and advocate for immediate action by Government to protect the environment. "Our specific objectives are; Raise awareness about the devastating effects of galamsey, Advocate for the Government to declare a state of emergency to stop all forms of mining activities on the water bodies, the buffers of the river and in the forest reserves to allow for the healing of the land, Mobilize Catholics and Ghanaians to demand immediate action, Promote environmental sustainability and protection, Foster collaboration among stakeholders to address the issue," they wrote in a press release dated October 4.
This notification of protest by the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, comes in the wake of demonstrations by groups such as Democracy Hub, Concerned Citizens and a threatened strike by Organised Labour.
