Reversion to 'original' logo cost less than GHS16,000 – EC boss

The Electoral Commission (EC) has said the decision to revert to the original eagles and coat of arms logo did not cost the state a substantial sum of money.

Jean Mensa told Kojo Yankson in an exclusive interview that many of the staff at the Commission thought the original logo better depicted the Commission’s core values of Integrity, Fairness and Accountability.

“It is important to note that it is not a branding exercise. Having been here you don’t see the logo everywhere. I don’t believe that even the old structures of the Commission bear the logo.

“Therefore the only change that has come up is the change in letterheads and that has cost, I think it is less; well below GHS 16,000,” she said.

That interview airs in full on the AM Show on Joy News channel on Monday, December 17.

Background

Shortly before the 2016 elections, Mrs Charlotte Osei introduced a new logo, stoking fierce controversy.

Despite the heavy criticism by some civil society organisations and opposition political parties at the time, the former EC boss stood by the decision to change the logo saying: “That is our new logo. We liked it, we picked it and it makes us happy.”

She was later impeached mid-2018 after allegations of misconduct and breach of procurement laws were made against her.

Jean Mensa was subsequently appointed by President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Ghanaians happy

Jean Mensah said the decision to revert to the original eagles and coat of arms logo has also been accepted by Ghanaians.

She said she has been emboldened by the general approval of the decision to restore the EC’s former logo which was controversially changed by her predecessor, Charlotte Osei.

She said the feedback has been “positive.”

“It is important to emphasise that the decision was by the seven-member commission and it was a unanimous decision. But I think the change resulted from the demands of the staff [of the Commission],” she said.
