“Check what students are saying”; security analyst tells UG, others

A security analyst wants the University of Ghana and other universities across the country to engage their students, following at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Monday.

Speaking to the AM Show on the Joy News channel Tuesday, Emmanuel Sowatey says the authorities should check what the concerns of their students are and assess whether or not such concerns can escalate as it did on KNUST campus.

“If I was in charge of security what I would tell Legon [UG] is check your system, what is happening, what are students saying, can it degenerate, can you put in place measures that will reinforce [harmony],” he said.

Mr Sowatey said the authorities should be steadfast in these engagements and focus on peacebuilding so the events at KNUST is not replicated on other campuses.

He also believes the media should take the lead in investigating the issues surrounding the violence since the media is the neutral body.

His comments come in a day after an intended peaceful demonstration at KNUST degenerated into a violence that led to the destruction of school and private property.

More than 30 vehicles were vandalised by the protestors, some of which were burnt. The reception of the main administration block was also vandalised.

The Education Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh,  premises at 10:00am for a meeting to discuss the way forward.
