When the desire to win takes you beyond winning; the Evan Eghan story

The future of film in Ghana definitely looks more promising as some young creatives are putting Ghana on the map with their work.

One of these young talents, Evan Eghan, 26, won big at a film reality TV show, ‘Script 2 Screen Africa 2018’ hosted in Nigeria.

The reality show was instituted with the purpose of using film as a tool for social change, and with the theme, ‘Film as a catalyst for revolution’. Countries that were represented included; Ghana, Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Kenya and South Africa.

After making it to the finals amongst 60 other contestants (consisting of actors, directors, scriptwriters, editors and cinematographers), Evan’s group which he led, produced and presented a film titled ‘ISIDORE’.

‘ISIDORE’ won the ultimate award; Overall Best Short Film, worth a plaque and an amount of one million Naira (about $2,780).

Evan’s talent and passion exhibited in the reality show caught the attention of one of the biggest filmmakers in Nigeria.

According to Evan "it was a climaxing" moment for him when the award-winning C.J Obasi publicly announced his interest in working with him.

Born Evan Eghan Kingston, Evan studied Literature at the Aburaman Senior High School, after which he was offered a scholarship to study Theatre Arts by the former Vice Chancellor of University of Ghana, Prof. Ernest Aryettey.

He graduated with first-class honours with a speciality in Radio/Film/TV Production and Acting.

In 2015, when Evan was professionally introduced into the Ghana movie industry by award-winning producer, Pascal Amanfo, his talent earned him a nomination as the Most Influential Student Actor at the Ghana Tertiary Awards 2015.

Some feature films to his credit include, ‘Sex in the Dark’, ‘No Man's Land’, ‘Black Emancipation Movement’, ‘Make Me a Star’, ‘Hooked’, ‘Tight’, ‘Rosemary’, ‘If God Be For Us’.

Some short films he has done also include; ‘Samai’, ‘Akom’, ‘The Rough Sketch’, and ‘Trial of Death’.

For the young filmmaker, the sole purpose of every film should not just be to entertain, but to correct social ills; and that’s a core mandate for him as a filmmaker.

With the hunger for more knowledge in the field, Evan wishes to spend some few years in Nollywood to work and learn, with the hope of breaking into Hollywood in due time.

Evan Eghan may just be Ghana’s first entertainer to become the President of Ghana as he does have such aspirations, however, he simply focuses on making more groundbreaking films across the continent and making impacts as much as he can.
