Be resolute in your stance against LGBTQI+ - Religious Affairs Minister urges Methodist Church

The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ebenezer Kojo Kum has urged the Methodist Church to remain resolute in its stance regarding Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender rights.

The Church has on multiple occasions expressed their disdain for such orientations.

According to them, it contradicts the teachings of the Bible and contravenes cultural tenets of the Ghanaian society.

The Minister shared these sentiments when he paid a courtesy call on the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church in Accra on Thursday, June 10.

“I have had the privilege of knowing the position of the Christian Council and I am very certain that position is no different from that of the Methodist Church Ghana. So when it comes to legislating, last month there was a colloquium in Kumasi about this LGBTQI thing and I hope that as a church when it comes to the level when we will need your input… I am very confident that when we reach that bridge and we need more input from you, it will be forthcoming.”

In recent times, conversations surrounding the legislation over LGBTQI+ rights have been at the fore.

Pro-gay activists have cried foul over what they say is discrimination suffered in the country over their sexuality.

But Mr Kojo Kojo Kum sees these developments as part of emerging situations that may threaten the fabric society.

President Bishop of the Methodist Church, Most Rev Paul Kwabena Boafo agrees with the Ahanta MP.

“We are standing our grounds as a church and we have published a book to help in educating our members… They are now even going out with some clips showing our members to dissociate themselves from such things because we see it as something unbiblical, something that theologically, doctrinally it is against our faith and practice.

He also pledged his support for any legislation that seeks to further enhance laws criminalising homosexuality.

Meanwhile, the Minister donated an amount of ¢2,000 to the running of Wesleyan TV and another ¢5,000 to the Methodist Rafiki Satellite Village.
