Cantonments building not ours – UNDP Country Director

The Ghana office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says it has no flats at the Cantonments in Accra.

The UNDP therefore, says reports suggesting that some staff of the organisation said to be housed in the four-storey building fitted with 48 apartments, cannot be true.

A contractor tasked to redevelop the structure built in the 1960s and was being rented out to officials of the diplomatic corps, had on Wednesday said, he has had to give up his work following unending harassment from National Security officials.

However, in a release issued Thursday, Country Director of UNDP, Gita Welch said: “The facility does not belong to UNDP and UNDP has not hired nor tasked any Contractor to redevelop it.”

The statement said the organisation, however, “condemn any act of vigilantism and remain committed to supporting Government to address any form of violence in the country.”
