NPP primaries: Akufo-Addo files nomination on Thursday

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is expected to file his nomination on Thursday, February 20, to contest the presidential primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Nana Akufo-Addo, according to a release by the NPP, will arrive at the party Head Office at 1 pm file to his nomination ahead of the April 25 exercise.

This will be Nana Akufo-Addo’s third straight time of leading the governing party into the elections since 2007 when he was first elected flagbearer of the NPP then in opposition. He, however, lost the elections to late President, John Evans Atta Mills in 2008.

On the second attempt in 2012, he lost controversially to John Dramani Mahama in an election that went to the Supreme Court for the results to be affirmed.

The year 2016 was his time as he humiliated the sitting president, John Dramani Mahama when he polled 5,755,758 representing 53.7% against 4,771,188 representing 44.5% by the incumbent to secure a first-round victory.

The President is yet again, seeking the endorsement of the delegates of the NPP to lead the party to the general elections of 2020 as its Presidential Candidate.

So far, he is the only candidate who has picked the party's presidential nomination forms for the flagbearership slot since the opening of nomination exactly a month ago.

In line with the party’s constitution and the rules and regulations for the upcoming primaries, the President, being the sole contestant thus far, is expected to be acclaimed as the party's 2020 flagbearer at a National Congress to be held simultaneously across the country on April 25, 2020.
