2nd edition of Luv FM High School Debate kick start with KUHIS win

Sanitation took centre stage as preliminaries for the second edition of Luv FM High School Debate got off to a flying start in Kumasi on Monday.

Kumasi High School emerged tops after two gruelling contests to book a place in the last 16.

They beat Bekwai SDA SHS and Asare Bediako SHS to pick one of eight slots to join eight seeded schools for the main contest.

Debutants, Bekwai SDA was paired with one of last year's trojans, Mmrantie of Kumasi High School.

They were tasked to make gains from the topic, ‘’Empowering Sanitary Inspectors is Solution to Ghana's Sanitation Challenges’’.

Principal speaker for Bekwai SDA, Kingsley Kofi Osei, says lack of incentives hamper their ability to go to remote places and deal with sanitary offenders.

Kumasi High lead speaker, Nana Kwasi Yeboah, citing the Japanese example, believes keeping the environment clean is the responsibility of all, powered by education. He argued that enforcing laws is the way to go.

 Kumasi High School bagged 145 points with Bekwai SDA settling with 135 points.

The second contest was a clash of two royal debutants, Royals of Afia Kobi SHS sought to upstage their peer of from Asare Bediako S.H.S.

The topic was, ‘Privatization of government-owned Basic Schools the Best way to Improve Education at the Basic Level’.

Asare Bediako's Sylvia Boateng endorsed the motion, indicating such a move would ensure efficiency due to effective supervision.

She holds that the challenging environment in private basic schools is a plus.

Ohemaa Yaa Takyiwaa Gyebi spoke to the contrary, argued exorbitant fees charged by private proprietors will negate expected results. Asare Bediako S.H.S got the better of Afia Kobi SHS by 140 points to 136.

‘WASCCE Grading System is not a Holistic Qualification into Tertiary Institutions in Ghana’, was put forward for the two winners from both contestants to debate.

Asare Bediako speaking in favour of the motion argued that collusion between WAEC officials and school heads has marred the reputation of the exam.

Recurrent cancellation of many papers almost every lends credence to the argument.

Afia Kobi SHS said adoption of WASCCE by 5 countries affirms the credibility of the exams.

In a deciding contest between the two winners, Kumasi High held their own against Asare Bediako SHS.
