Prolific Ghanaian playmaker Christain Atsu has sadly announced the demise of his dear mother early today on social media.

The Newcastle winger, in a solemn tweet, said his mother Mada Afiko will be missed beyond measure.

“Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure as you left us today #RIPMum ??,”

Many of his colleagues have commiserated with him and his team Newcastle United have expressed their deepest condolence to the player.

In a 2018 interview, Atsu credited his mother for his strong religious background which continues to guide his career.

He said: “One day, I went to church. If I went to church one Sunday, then the next Sunday maybe I would not go. At this time I was not even 16 years old. Then the pastor told my mum something. I was very young, but what he said was very painful to me“One day, I went to church. If I went to church one Sunday, then the next Sunday maybe I would not go. At this time I was not even 16 years old. Then the pastor told my mum something. I was very young, but what he said was very painful for me.

“He said, ‘if you are this age and you don’t know what is good or bad, then maybe you will not grow again’. I took this as a bad comment, but for me, I think it was a good thing. I realised that ‘He has seen me as a grown man. I can make a decision’. It’s what you are doing, what you believe in, how you think. I felt that what you can go through can help you become a man quickly.”

Atsu, 28, was born in Ada Foah on Ghana’s south-east coast. He was one of ten children and his father Immanuel who died when he was aged 12.
