Central Furniture Works fire: 95% of items in shop evacuated – Fire Service PRO

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to a distress call Friday dawn to put out a fire at the warehouse of Central Furniture Works at Sakaman in Accra.

According to the Acting Head of Public Relations of the Ghana Fire Service Ellis Robinson Okoe, they received the call around 2am even though they were later informed that the fire started between the hours of 12:00am and 1:00am.

He explained that even though they got easy access to the building, his men struggled to battle the fire effectively in the beginning due to the excessive smoke which was emanating from the basement where the fire started from.

The fire service personnel had to resort to the use of smoke extractors so they could get full access to the basement to fight the fire.

With the help of people around, the majority of the items in the shop were taken out before the fire got out of hand.

In an interview, Mr. Okoe stated that “so far we have been able to salvage about 95 percent of the cargo inside. So far what we have is just about a little. A mixed cargo made up of words, glues and materials used in the manufacturing of furniture”.



At the time of speaking to Mr Okoe, the fire had been put out but he said some of his men were going to stay behind to ensure all the little pockets of fire are totally quenched.

Even though the Fire Service is yet to ascertain the cause of the fire, some eyewitnesses who spoke to GhanaWeb gave varied accounts of how it began.
