A communicator with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ernest Yaw Kumi, has admonished the opposition National Democratic (NDC), to accept the latest prediction by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) in good faith.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, the NPP communicator said even with the prediction of victory for the party, it was obvious it was going to win the 2020 polls hands down.
Former National Organizer for the NDC, Kofi Adams, has rubbished the latest prediction of victory for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2020 polls by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
EIU has predicted re-election victory for the governing NPP in 2020.
EIU said in a report on Ghana released recently that “Nana Akufo-Addo, the president, and his NPP will see the country’s economic situation generally improve during the remainder of their terms of office. In the presidential election, it says Akufo-Addo will face a challenge from John Mahama— Ghana’s president from 2012 to early 2017, who was elected leader of the opposition NDC in February 2019.”
The report, released on May 13, 2019, stated further that “the 2016 legislative election was won by the NPP; and the campaign was dominated by the faltering economy, which many Ghanaians still associate with Mr. Mahama.”
Accordingly, “The Economist Intelligence Unit believes that it will be difficult for the NDC under Mr. Mahama to portray itself as the better custodian of Ghana’s economy, especially as the country’s growth outlook is fairly strong.”
The think tank, therefore, said they “expect Mr. Akufo-Addo and the NPP to secure re-election in 2020. They, however, noted that, if the NDC can present a coherent opposition and hold the NPP to account on unfulfilled campaign promises particularly on job creation and industrialization, where progress has been generally slow and success patchy—the election could be closely contested.”
But reacting to the report, Mr. Adams said the report or prediction is not a Bible whose contents are biding for Christians.
He said if elections were held today, the NPP will lose because it has lost touch with the people of Ghana.
But Mr. Ernest Kumi says the NDC cannot win the 2020 polls with former President Mahama as a candidate due to his incompetence and appetite for corruption.
He said the NPP has done so well in executing their key policies including the free senior high school policy.
To him, these achievements will make the NPP win in 2020, and Ghanaians would not need a soothsayer to convince them the NPP was bound to win 2020.
He said the challenges confronting the nation, were being solved by the NPP and any attempt to bring back the NDC and the incompetent Mahama and his corrupt NDC, will spell doom for Ghanaians.
