Eastern Regional Minister commissions administration block for Akwamuman Senior High School

Eastern regional minister, Eric Kwakye Darfuor has commissioned a new administrative block for the Akwamuman Senior High School at a colorful ceremony held on the school’s campus.

The well-planned and spacious new administration block houses the reception, the headmaster’s office, the office of the Assistant headmaster, the Account’s office, staff common room and the will also house the various Heads of Departments.

The administrative block is to among other things provide a convenient administrative ambience for the administrative staff of the school and upgrade the institution to a status of a modern and a leading Senior High School in the country.

With a student population of 2790, Akwamuman senior high school is one of the many Senior High Schools running the double track system in the country.

Addressing a gathering of students, staff and other dignitaries at the event, the Eastern regional minister expressed satisfaction over the timely execution of the project explaining that it was a launchpad to elevating the academy, adding that it was the intention of government to provide the needed infrastructural facilities and serene environment to make both teaching and non-teaching staff as well as students comfortable to enhance academic performance.

The minister who doubles as Member of Parliament for Nkawkaw lauded the government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on its implementation of the Free Senior High School policy describing it as one of the best policies the country has witnessed.

The minister in touting the free SHS programme said the development of any country stems from the quality of its human resource and that can only be achieved through education hence, the need to commend the NPP government for implementing the program.

With the NPP government’s commitment to pursuing free senior high school education for Ghanaian stud, Mr. Darfuor reiterated the president’s love for education and his resolve to ensure that every child has unfettered access to education. “The president [Nana Akuffo Addo] says let no child remain at home,” he said. “This is important because it is only education that can bring equity. Education can bring you at par with the child of the president.”

With education largely touted as the key to success, Honourable Kwakye Darfuor did not hesitate in encouraging the students to take advantage of the opportunity at their disposal but “grab it and use it well,” adding that the relationship between teachers and students is spiritual and students ought to respect their teachers.

The government of Ghana continues to invest a substantial amount of money into its free SHS policy. The minister who recounted his difficult days as a child who struggled to access education said with the free SHS and double track system, money could no longer be a hindrance to education.

The regional minister also expressed worry over the number of uncompleted facilities and urged contractors to complete one project before beginning a new one. Most projects at various institutions including the Akwamuman SHS remain uncompleted, a situation the minister does not find amusing.

On his part, District Chief Executive of Asuogyaman, Samuel Kwame Agyekum averred that the completion of the administration block was ample testimony of government’s commitment to completing other ongoing projects in the school.

The assembly chief who recently cut sod for the construction of a 10 seater modern toilet facility funded by the 1 million dollar per constituency project for the school said the gesture further underscored the commitment of government to equip the school with all resources and adequate infrastructure to ease its operations.

Hon Agyekum while reiterating the need for the students to take their studies seriously said this was necessary to realize the best intentions of the free SHS policy.

For headmaster of the school, Mr. Stephen Aglah, though he expressed his delight at the project, he nevertheless appealed for the completion of other projects of the school which were still at various stages of completion. Out of 54 classroom blocks in the school, Mr. Aglah regretted that only 22 were completed with the remaining 32 at various stages of completion.

Further, the headmaster observed that the school has only 12 staff bungalows which are inadequate for the accommodation requirements of the school. The situation, with its associated inconveniences has forced many teachers to locate in satellite communities with proximity to the school.

Mr. Aglah therefore appealed for the establishment of more accommodation facilities for staff to improve maximum teaching and learning environment for both students and staff.

Other projects yet to be completed include a dormitory block being funded by the GETFund, the Home Economics block and a 2000 capacity assembly hall cum dining hall.

Describing the government as a listening government, Board chairman of the school, Mr. Felix Essah-Hienno re-echoed government’s commitment to education through the implementation of the free SHS policy and double track system.

Established in 1969 with 29 boys and 4 girls, the Akwamuman Senior High School currently has a massive enrolment of 2790 students including 1239 boys and 1551 girls.
