Road carnage: VIP installs speed trackers in buses

VIP Jeoung Transport Company Limited has initiated moves to improve road safety by fixing tracking devices in their buses.

General Manager of the company, Ernest Adakrabe Frimpong Manso, who disclosed this, said the device provides regular update on movement, location and speed limit details of vehicles.

“We have installed trackers in our buses to ensure that buses are tracked and monitored to ensure their safety,” he said on Accra based UTV monitored by Adomonline.com.

At least 60 people were crashed dead last Friday and several others injured in separate road accidents in the Central and Bono East regions involving high occupancy vehicles.

Official statistics from the Police show that 411 people have been killed and 2,048 others injured through road crashes from January to February this year.

The latest to reignite the conversation is last Friday’s two separate gory accidents that occurred at Kintampo and Ekumfi which claimed more than 60 lives and left several others injured.

Speaking on the carnage, the VIP Manager said the trackers would “help manage speed as a major contributory factor to road traffic crashes.”

He said most accidents in the country are caused by human error.

He added that his outfit has made arrangements to ensure that commercial drivers, who would be carrying passengers on a journey that would last more than four hours, especially at night, are given at least six hours of sleep in the last 10 hours prior to the start of journey.

In addition to that, long distance drivers would have a break for some minutes after driving continuously for three hours.

He, therefore, urged drivers to avoid unnecessary overtaking and speeding.
