Aviation Ministry to set up bureau for data collection

Authorities in the aviation sector are set to emphasize the collection and use of data with the setting up of a bureau headed by an Investigator-In-Chief.

This forms part of a new legal framework for the sector passed by Parliament.

The LI, known as the Aircraft Accident and Serious Incident Regulations, will mature into law after 21 sitting days of parliament.

The Regulation is expected to boost the country’s compliance with international aviation safety standards.

Deputy Aviation Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, said the regulations will enhance air-travel in the country.

“They will help us set up a bureau where we can have an Investigator In Chief that can build data like we are saying and build the IT system and put together a database of experts who can help in investigations and all that.”

The setting up of the bureau comes at a time when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assented to the Ghana Civil Aviation (Amendment) Bill to become Act 985 (2019).

The Amendment of the Ghana Civil Aviation Act 906 (2016) is to address the various deficiencies raised by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) with respect to the Aviation sector.

The New Act thus empowers GCAA to continue with the provision of Air Navigation Services till a new entity is formed.

It also enhances the role of the Minister of Aviation in the areas of accidents and investigations.

Parliament on March 8, passed the Bill to improve safety and strengthen security in the aviation industry.
