Ramos took pain killers to play in Supercopa as alarm bells ring at Real Madrid

Sergio Ramos was far from peak fitness during Real Madrid's Supercopa de Espana defeat to Athletic Club on Thursday night.

The centre-back played on pain killers because of a problem with his left knee. He almost didn't take to the field following the warm-up but, after discussing the matter with the club doctors, he decided to play anyway.

It's fairly common for Ramos to play through the pain or on pain killers for Real Madrid. He did so during the 2014 Club World Cup final after suffering from a nerve issue.

This time, though, there is significant concern within Real Madrid, because the problem is with his knee. The club will monitor the situation closely over the coming days.

It's almost certain that Ramos won't play against Alcoyano in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, though he could return against Alaves in LaLiga Santander next weekend.

Zinedine Zidane isn't a big fan of getting his players to play through the pain barrier, which is why he sent Nacho Fernandez out to warm up ahead of the Athletic clash.

Nacho did make it on at the break when Raphael Varane was unable to shake off a knock he'd picked up in the first half. Ramos stayed on, though.

The 34-year-old didn't have a bad game at La Rosaleda - he was one of Real Madrid's most serious threats in the closing stages.
