AC Milan step up pursuit of Tomori as they discuss loan deal with buy option

AC Milan are stepping up talks with Chelsea over a loan deal for Fikayo Tomori.

The Italians had been hoping to sign Strasbourg's Mohamed Simakan but the 20-year-old is leaning towards a move to Red Bull Leipzig where he is viewed as a potential replacement for Dayot Upamecano who is being considered by Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Bayern Munich for a summer transfer.

Tomori, 23, had interest from Newcastle United among others in England plus clubs in La Liga but is keen on a move to Italy and Chelsea see it as a good move for his development.

The clubs have discussed a loan with the option to make a move permanent for around £27million but all parties are expected to agree to a loan then take stock in the summer.

Chelsea want a new centre-back and have an abundance they are willing to move on though Frank Lampard believes England prospect Tomori - who has made just four first-team appearances this season for the Blues - can kick on with the right experience.

'Fikayo Tomori absolutely has a long-term future at this club, and we'll see if and when he goes on loan,' said Lampard ahead of his side's clash against Fulham on Saturday.

'The moment I got close to Fikayo was when I took him to Derby with me and he was Player of the Year there and one of the best players in the Championship that year in my opinion.

'And then he came back and played 20-plus games for us at a very young age last year and got in the England squad. There's an absolute long-term plan for Fikayo in my head about his career here.

'And if it's to go and play games it's to absolutely enhance his personal development.

'Hopefully help whatever team he goes to, because that will come hand in hand, and then come back to us a better player.'

Chelsea are also willing to listen to offers for Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.
