No quota system in Black Stars call-ups - Ghana coach Akonnor

Ghana coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has disclosed that there will not be any quota system for players in the domestic league as all players must fight to earn a place in his squad.

Recent Black Stars squad has been dominated by Ghanaian players abroad which led to calls for a quota system to be put in place to ensure players in the Ghana Premier League get to play for the national team in order to boost their confidence.

Akonnor has made a bold statement on this issue in an interview which clearly shows his team will be dominated by Ghanaian players abroad as outfield players in the domestic league continue to struggle to earn a place in the national team.

”We don’t have a quota for local-based players in the national team but if you’re a home-based player and you work hard, you’ll be called,” Akonnor said in an interview.

Despite this statement, Akonnor named three local players in his first call-up which he explained that the three players called deserved to be in his squad.

He named Aduana Stars forward Yahaya Mohammed, who was leading goal scorer in the Ghana Premier League which was cancelled due to the pandemic, Kwadwo Amoako of AshantiGold and Habib Mohammed for the Black Stars squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier double-header against Sudan which was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
