Gov't yet to decide on football returning behind closed doors- Deputy Sports Minister

Ghana’s Deputy Sports Minister Perry Okudzeto says government is yet to consider whether football can return behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The current season has been suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak in the West Africa country with Ghana recording over 6000 cases.

All social activities have been suspended including sporting activities by the government until May 31 which is subject to review.

According to reports, the Ghana FA at it recent meeting with the COVID-19 Presidential team proposed to continue the season behind closed doors.

Perry Okudzeto in a discussion to talk about the effects of the Covid-19 on sports says no decision has come before government,

“The option of playing in empty stadia is fine. When we get there and we think that it’s the best option for us in terms of making our game safe it will be one of the options we will consider. However, as we speak that decision has not been taken”, he told JOY news

“For a football match or any sporting activity to take place, it’s not only the players, technical team, stadium managers, all kinds of people who will come together to make a football match.

“It’s important that this is managed in a holistic way. That’s why the President of the Republic [Nana Akufo-Addo] is managing it the way it ought to be so we cannot be in isolation as a sector we have to be sort of be in the mix of what generally is been done to manage the case in Ghana. We would have to get to the point where government decides it’s okay to have public gatherings,” he added.
