The driver behind the wheel of the truck that caused Thursday morning’s accident in Ashaiman absconded after the accident, according to police.

One person is believed to have died and at least six injured after a KIA truck veered off road and run into market women and pedestrians at the Ashaiman market.

A video of the gory accident hit social media and it’s harrowing to watch after the truck had mauled the crowd, leaving people lying down with severed limbs and crushed bodies.

NOTICE:

Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ashaiman Police Divisional Command, DSP Isaac Kojo Forson, confirmed news of the accident to 3news earlier today.

According to him the car was coming towards the Ashaiman Traffic Light from the Ashaiman SHS around 9am Thursday when the accident occurred.

The truck developed a malfunction, believed to be defective brakes, and run into the group of traders around the Barclays Bank near the traffic light.

Aside the people who were run over other cars also were hit by the runaway truck.

Mr Forson said when police got to the scene of the accident after receiving a call, the driver had already ‘vanished’.

The injured people from the accident are receiving treatment at the Emergency Unit of the Tema General Hospital whilst the dead have been transferred to the morgue for autopsy.
