Amnesty International wants periodic briefings on kidnapped girls case

Amnesty International Ghana has asked the Ghana Police Service to do better in its handling of the Takoradi kidnapping case.

Three girls have been missing for nearly six months, with a Nigerian national currently being held as a key suspect.

The suspect is currently facing trial not for the kidnapping, but for escaping from police custody.

Families of the three girls have been piling pressure on authorities to rescue the girls.

Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of Ghana’s independence parade ceremony in Takoradi on Wednesday, the Board Chairman of Amnesty International office in Ghana, George Aggrey, said the security agencies must do more to assure the affected families.

“The thing is that we expect the security to do regular briefing as to what they are doing. Again we also want to know what they are doing with their counterpart in Nigeria, because this gentleman [the key suspect] is Nigerian. If we are able to know what they are doing then we would be reassured,” he said.

Amnesty International insists after 62 years of independence, the country’s security services have no excuse for not being on top of their jobs.

“Having chalked 62, we are old enough to be independent in most areas of our life as a nation and most important of it all is security, when it comes to security, that is the area people can work in freedom. And as you are aware, freedom and justice being the motto of this nation is something that we need to work towards,” he said.

He also mentioned that what is currently of concern to Amnesty International is that the investigation and proceeding of the trial of the suspect must be done transparently.
