Ghana Lions elects Premier Leaders for District 418

Ghana Lions attained the status of a provisional District in June 2018 after years of being a part of West Africa Multiple District 403 (A2) since Lionism started in Ghana on December 22, 1987, with the formation of Accra Premier Lions club.

To become a recognised District, there was a need to elect leaders to manage the affairs for the new district.

On Saturday, January 12, 2019, Lion delegates from across the country gathered at the Urbano Hotel in Osu, Accra to elect the foremost leaders for the District.

The process led by coordinating Lion HOB Lawal, Past International Director from Nigeria started with outlining of rules, speeches and reading of campaign manifestoes by candidates.

When the election came to an end, the popular choice, Lion Dr. Kwaku Mensa-Bonsu affectionately known as KMB became the first ever Lions Governor of Ghana District 418 and will be supported by officials Lion Helen Maku Obeng, first deputy Governor and Lion David Owusu Anokye, second deputy Governor.

In his acceptance speech, Lion KMB thanked delegates and assured fellow Lions of his commitment to growing Lionism in Ghana and Africa at large.

In an interview, Lion Dr. Sebastian Nafrah, a Charter President of Accra Ultimate Lions Club, urged all well-meaning Ghanaians to develop the attitude of service to create a better society.

He admonished those who have little to spare to join great clubs like the Lions Club International.

Lions clubs in Ghana has undertaken in several service projects and activities in Ghana including the Cape Coast Hearing Assessment Centre, Ultra-Modern Eye Hospital at Korle-bu Teaching hospital, the eye care centre at Tema General Hospital, annual free cleft surgeries (Operation Smile), Health screening, feeding the underprivileged amongst others.

Ultimately, Lions clubs seek to serve communities. WE serve when a need arises. Service is our common bond, and service is what will help us maintain relevance, visibility and recognition in our communities.

 

Lions Clubs International (LCI) is an international non-political service organization, established originally in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois by Melvin Jones. It is now headquartered in Oak Brook, Illinois. As of April 2015, it had over 46,000 local clubs and more than 1.7 million members (Lions & LEO) in 190 countries around the world.

The stated purposes of Lions Clubs International are:

  • To Organize, charter and supervise service clubs to be known as Lions clubs.
  • To Coordinate the activities and standardize the administration of Lions clubs.
  • To Create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world.
  • To Promote the principles of good government and good citizenship.
  • To Take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community.
  • To Unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding.
  • To Provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members.
  • To Encourage service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavours.
