Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has earmarked some principal streets in Accra and Kumasi for hawking during the yuletide.
The move dubbed ‘Street Hawking Markets’ is also in partnership with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Division(MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, to make trading activities this Christmas incident-free.
In a memo signed by Local Government Minister, Hajia Alima Mahama, all the designated hawking streets will be closed to traffic from Monday, December 16, 2019, to Wednesday, January 1, 2020, between 5:00 am to11:00pm during the period.
It, however, advised pedestrians, motorists, hawkers, and the general public to abide by the directive to ease vehicular and human traffic.
This new directive comes after an earlier memo from the Ministry that ordered MMDAs to implement measures aimed at enhancing pedestrian and vehicular mobility during the festive season.
