TDC taskforce storms Tema GES office, begins demolition exercise

A taskforce from the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) demolished the Tema Metro office of the Ghana Education Service (GES) today [Thursday].

All the doors to about eight offices were removed, furniture was scattered, documents were thrown out and the director’s garage destroyed.

Documents including past BECE certificates of BECE candidates were also thrown out by the taskforce.

Speaking to Citi News, some of the employees who witnessed the incident said the task force failed to give reasons for the demolition.

“It was this morning around 11:30 when we saw a task force of about 15 people in a pickup. They didn’t greet anybody or ask of the director, they just started demolishing the building whilst our officers were inside here working. They demolished the room of the exam coordinator and the room of the auditor, some of the officers were on the field and some were in there working. We have two buildings; the main and the annex, so they were demolishing the annex building. We came out of the main building and tried to stop them but because they were macho men, there was nothing we could do”.

“Some of our guys tried to take videos of what was happening but they rushed on one of them and attacked him. They ceased his phone and took it away and we don’t even know where to get it from. After they did that they left and we don’t know what will happen tomorrow. Some of the doors cannot be locked and we have very vital documents in there. As an educationist, we have the BECE certificates of some of the children, our auditor’s reports and other documents are all in there and we don’t know what to do. We are supposed to move but we have not gotten a place … That is why we are still here”.

An employee whose phone was confiscated by the task force for filming the incident told Citi News that attempts by the director of education to retrieve his phone were not successful since the commander of the task force ordered that the phone be taken away.

Citi News checks reveal that the TDC had earlier served notice for GES to leave the premises but they failed to do so, resulting in the chaotic incident that transpired at the premises today.
