Jean Mensa a good choice for EC chair – Ambassador Jackson

Outgoing United States Ambassador to Ghana, Robert P. Jackson, has backed President Akufo-Addo’s nomination of Jean Mensa for the position of Electoral Commission chairperson.

He said Jean Mensah has the needed qualities to run the affairs of the commission.

Ambassador Jackson noted that it is critical to, as soon as possible, get the commission up and running, ahead of the 2020 general election.

“I know Jean Mensa, I respect her. From what I know, she is a good choice to head the Electoral Commission. If the opposition – whether it is the NDC or other parties – have concerns about her fitness for the job then they should bring up those concerns during the vetting process.”

“But it is important that the Electoral Commission gets back to work. For more than a year now, the Commission has been largely paralyzed by the impeachment process. So let’s make certain everyone is satisfied with the people that the president has proposed. Let’s get the Commission back to work and move on so that the commission is in the best possible position to be a neutral arbiter for the next election,” he added.

IEA boss, Jean Mensa nominated new EC Chair

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday nominated the Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs, (IEA) Jean Adukwei Mensa as the chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

She was appointed with three others, two of whom will serve as her deputies.

The three others are; Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairperson, Dr. Eric Asare Bossman, Deputy Chairperson and Ms. Adwoa Asuama Abrefa, member of the Commission.

This was after the president removed the former EC chairperson, Charlotte Osei and two of her deputies.

Members of the opposition National Democratic Congress are however livid over Jean Mensa’s appointment accusing her of having NPP inclinations.

EC appoints regrettable – Former President Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama in a tweet on Tuesday, July 24, described the nomination of four new officials to the Electoral Commission as a “regrettable” decision.

According to Mr. Mahama, the controversy surrounding the removal of Mrs. Charlotte Osei and her deputies and the subsequent appointment of Mrs. Jean Mensa and two other deputy commissioners and a member is a potential threat to Ghana’s democratic credentials.
