E/R: Koforidua SecTech to be ‘focal point’ for STEM education – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has said that Koforidua Secondary Technical School (SecTech) will be the focal point for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in the Eastern Region.

According to the President one senior high school in every region will be selected as a focal point to spearhead STEM education in that region.

“Emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, what is now called STEM education has been agreed by all thinkers of education as being the core knowledge that is required to propel the economies of the 21st Century. We have therefore decided to choose in every region one school to be a focal point of STEM education. Koforidua SecTech has been chosen as the school for the STEM education in the Eastern Region,” the president announced on his visit to the school as part of his three-day tour of the region.

Addressing a gathering of students, teachers and other head teachers of some selected schools at the Koforidua Secondary Technical School to climax his 3-day tour, President Akufo-Addo said the purpose of his government’s investment in secondary education is to make the acquisition of knowledge and technology widely spread in the country for students to succeed in this 21st century.

“The purpose for the investment that we are making in education in our country is that the countries that will succeed in the 21^st century are the countries that take acquisition of knowledge and technology seriously. That is why we are making this investment in secondary education. We want the acquisition of knowledge to be widespread in our country so that every deserving young boy or girl has an opportunity to get the knowledge that is going to be needed for Ghana’s 21^st century success,” he said.

Nana Akufo-Addo also pleaded with beneficiaries of the Free Senior High School to come out with excellent results in their exams.

“I want to make one appeal to the students in form three, who are going to be writing the exams next June. You are going to be the first lot of Free Education Senior High Students to sit the exams. As you know there are powerful political figures in the country who don’t like the Free Senior High policy, the most effective answer to all these critics is going to be seen in the performance of your exams next June. I am confident that you are going to produce results that are going to put them to shame,” he said.
