Court acquits Dr. Obengfo

An Accra Circuit Court has acquitted Dr. Dominic Kwame Obeng-Andoh, the owner of the Obengfo Hospital, located at Weija in Accra.

He was charged for being an unregistered practitioner and operating an unlicensed health facility.

But the Court on Tuesday in its ruling did not find him culpable per the charges proffered by the prosecution.

The judge, Emmanuel Essandoh, in a 100-page ruling indicated that there were inconsistencies in the evidence given by the prosecution witnesses and by that; the evidence was discredited and insufficient.

The Medical and Dental Council during its routine monitoring in July 2015, received information that Dr Obeng-Andoh had failed to renew his annual license to practice and to operate the private facility.

Armed with this information, the Council made a complaint with the police which led to his arrest on December 28, 2016.

Dr. Obeng-Andoh was being investigated over the death of Stacy Offei Darko at his medical facility.

According to the mother of the deceased, Nana Akosua Animah, her 37-year-old daughter fell ill and sought medical attention at the Obengfo Hospital but died after her admission.

In January 2017, the Medical and Dental Council closed down Obengfo Hospital for operating illegally.

That was the second legal action the facility faced after the council first revoked Dr. Obeng-Andoh’s licence in 2013 for operating illegally.

Dr. Obeng-Andoh was in December 2016, also arrested over the same issue after the Dental and Medical Council said it had received several complaints from some persons who patronized the facility.

According to the Council, Dr. Obeng-Andoh endangers the lives of his patients hence the move to stop his operations.
