#WAI: Highway Authority to build concrete barrier along Tema Motorway median

The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) says it is in talks with the Ministry of Roads and Highways in order to secure funding for the construction of a concrete barrier along the Accra-Tema Motorway as part of measures to curb the use of unapproved routes by motorists.

This comes after the police arrested some 40 drivers for using illegal routes on the Motorway and subsequently prosecuted them.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News, the Public Relations Officer of the Authority, Diana Seade disclosed that the GHA has made several attempts to curb illegal U-turns as well other road offences and acts of indiscipline, but all of such attempts have proven futile.

Diana Seade revealed that her outfit is waiting for funding approval from the Road Ministry to commence work on a  concrete barrier similar to the ones on the Aburi-Accra stretch and some parts of the Kwame Nkrumah interchange.

“We have always gone back the Motorway to put barriers whereever they have created these u-turns but they always go back to remove these barriers or create additional ones. They use metals to cut it.”

“This has been going on for a long time but our proposal is at the Ministry and waiting for approval for onward funding so that we are able to build a concrete barrier in the median along the stretch of the Motorway.. from Accra to Tema, just like we have for Circle and Aburi, where you cannot cross to the other end except by using approved u-turns.”

Drivers dragged to court for traffic-related offences

The campaign against indiscipline being championed by Citi FM and Citi TV has yielded positive results as more recalcitrant drivers are being arrested and made to face the full rigours of the law.

23 out of 39 culprits arrested on Tuesday on the Spintex Road for breaking traffic regulations have been put before the La District Magistrate Court.

The arrests follow a special police deployment in response to Citi FM and Citi TV‘s War Against Indiscipline (WAI) campaign.

About 40 drivers were, on Monday, arrested on the motorway for making illegal U-turns.

They were arraigned and fined between GHc600 and GHc800.

The Presiding Judge, Juliet Osei Doudo threatened to increase the fines from GHc600 to Ghc1,200 to deter drivers from engaging in indisciplined acts.

The War Against Indiscipline campaign by Citi FM/Citi TV is also aimed at putting pressure duty bearers to ensure discipline on roads.

In response, the Police in partnership with Citi TV and Citi FM embarked on an operation to arrest drivers caught using illegal U-turns.

#WAI, since it started, has charged citizens to be responsible while reporting other irresponsible drivers by filming them in a name and shame approach.
