Contempt case: Subin MP accuses Judge of being Mahama’s boy in bizarre petition to CJ

In an apparent attempt to frustrate the court process and shy away from justice, the Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi has sent a bizarre petition to the Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah, accusing a Kumasi High Court Judge of bias and unfair treatment in a contempt case pending before the court.

The MP, who doubles as Deputy Works and Housing Minister, is strangely accusing Justice Amedaher Senyo of being a protégé of former president John Mahama and have religiously supported the activities of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the years, and therefore, cannot be trusted to dispense justice in a highly political matter such as the one before him.

Eugene Boakye Antwi, Chairman Wontumi together with Patrick Acheampong, Ashanti Regional Director of Research and Election, the Subin Constituency Chairman Michael Adusei Bonsu, and his Secretary Akuamoah Boateng, are facing contempt of court brought against them by 51 delegates of the constituency, led by Isaac Nimako, the first applicant.

The 51 applicants are seeking a declaration that the June 20 NPP primary election, by which the sitting MP claims to have been re-elected by 485 votes, was illegal, unlawful and wrongful, and should be declared null and void.

Eugene Boakye Antwi sheepishly claims in his petition, which has led to the indefinite suspension of the case, that the presiding Judge recently held secret meeting with Mr Mahama and some NDC executives when they recently visited the Ashanti Region without providing any shred of evidence or proof.

“We have received information that, the NDC leadership when they came to Kumasi on the 15th day of September, 2020 scrumptiously met Justice Senyo Amedaher at an exclusive place and promised him that, they would pay to him huge amount of money if he convicts us, especially myself- Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, and Chairman Wontumi-Regional Chairman for NPP, Ashanti Region.

“… Justice Amedaher is a well-known NDC sympathizer. His comments and conduct in this case are very bias. The lawyer handling the contempt case for the applicants is a well-known NDC member who has contested several times for the NDC,” portions of the petitioned alleged.

Court officials familiar with case say Justice Senyo is utterly shocked and dismayed by the actions of the minister, who has chosen to jeopardize his career at the bench by making spurious allegations against him.

The applicants are irked by the turn of events and believe the Minister’s action is an attempt to derail the court process and ostensibly compel the party to put him up as their candidate since the EC would open nominations from October 6, 2020.

Reacting to the recent development, some of the applicants who want to remain anonymous, vowed to fight tooth and nail to ensure justice is delivered in the matter.

“Eugene and his cohorts are clearly running away from justice and are clutching at straws. We will not relent on this matter until justice is fully served. The wheel of justice may grind slowly but he must not forget its impact would be exceedingly devastating,” one of the aggrieved applicants intimated.
