NPP pitching Mahama against Otumfuo - NDC

The National Democratic Congress has alleged that members of the NPP are conniving to incite Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II against Former President Mahama, following his comments at UN that Mr Mahama was persuaded to concede defeat after the 2016 general elections.

According to the opposition party, NPP is trying to create tension between Asantehene and the former president.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II earlier revealed during a speech delivered at the UN General Assembly that Manhyia Palace intervened to “coax” John Mahama into conceding defeat during the 2016 general elections.

Shortly afterwards, however, former Chief of Staff under the Mahama administration, Julius Debrah denied the claims made by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II insisting that was false.

Addressing journalists at press conference held in Accra on Monday September 16, General Secretary Asiedu Nketia neither denied nor confirmed the monarch’s comments.

He, however, pointed to a deliberate attempt on the part of the governing party to create enmity between the leadership of the NDC and the Asantehene.

He was also of the view that the NPP purposely brought out excerpts of Otumfuo’s speech to tarnish either the Asantehene’s image or that of former president Mahama’s.

“We have seen attempts of throwing sand into the gari of many Ghanaians who are excited about Otumfuo’s appearance at the world stage by culling out excerpts of his speech and putting certain interpretations on that speech which is designed to lower either the image of His Majesty Otumfuo or the image of Mahama. They want to soil the excellent relations between Otumfour and His Excellency John Mahama” Asiedu Nketia added.

He maintained that the NPP is trying to create an impression that former president Mahama’s decision to heed to Otumfuo’s advice in 2016, makes him less of a democrat.
