GNAT withdraws teachers over Murder

The Ghana National Association of Teachers(GNAT) has withdrawn all teachers serving in the four Basic Schools at Asiakwa in the Eastern Region following the cold-blooded murder of a teacher at Asiakwa Salvation Army Basic School in the Municipality.

Officials of GNAT told Kasapa 102.5 FM that it has instructed its members in the town not to report to School for teaching until the other two suspects involved in the crime who are currently at large are arrested by the Police.

“On Monday we met with all the Headteachers and Teachers of the four basic schools in the town including Salvation Army, Presby, Methodist, and R/C, and we thought it wise that it’s unsafe for our members to still teach amidst the dangerous situation at hand. So we’ve directed them to withdraw and close down the schools until the Police arrest the other two suspects for prosecution, the Municipal Secretary for GNAT, Thomas Awuah Oppong, told host Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM. ”

The Kibi District Magistrate Court has remanded into Police Custody four teenagers arrested in connection with the fatal assault and murder of the deceased teacher at Asiakwa Salvation Army Basic School.

The four accused persons facing provisional charges of conspiracy to commit murder and murder are Richard Amaning, 18, Mireku Emmanuel, 17, Philip Okodie, 17, and Paul Boadu, 18.

They will reappear in Court on May 14, 2019.

Background

The Kibi Police Command in the Eastern region arrested the four teenagers for ruthlessly beating the Twi and Religious and Moral Education teacher of Salvation Army Basic School, George Somuah Bosompem to death.

The 55-year-old deceased was attacked for protesting against the invasion of a garden by suspected drug addicts who smoke and defecate in the school.

Kasapa News has gathered that four (4) days before the attack, the teacher went on an Information centre to caution the youth to desist from smoking in the school to avert prosecution.

On April 28, 2019, while walking with a lady friend, the suspected addicts attacked the deceased teacher with sticks, stones, blocks and other deadly weapons.

The suspects did not also spare the lady friend of the deceased as they manhandled her.

The incident attracted many residents to the scene, fortunately, a Police Patrol team met the chaotic scene and managed to arrest one of the suspects, Richard Amaning,18, alias Konko who pretended to be providing support to carry the deceased into a waiting vehicle but the other accomplices managed to run away.

The teacher who was badly injured was rushed to the Kibi Government Hospital but was transferred to St. Joseph Hospital where he passed on.

Later, Police investigations led to the arrest of Mireku Emmanuel 17, Philip Okodie,17, and Paul Boadu,18.

The Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh confirmed the incident adding that the suspects will reappear in court on May 7, 2019, on the provisional charge of murder.

He said efforts are underway to arrest other accomplices.

Meanwhile, teachers at the Asiakwa Salvation Army Basic School are on a sit down strike ahead of a planned demonstration rescheduled to Tuesday May 14, 2019 to demand protection.

According to them, they feel threatened and may desert the community if they are not provided adequate security while ensuring that justice is served over the murder of their colleague.

The incident is being reported barely 24 hours after angry residents of Muramura Community in Kwahu South District of the Eastern region lynched and set fire into the body of a 29-year-old mentally derailedKofi Sammy for killing an eight-month-old Pregnant Woman, Alimatu Karim and mutilating and cooking parts of her body.
