Name and shame open defecators – AMA boss charges

Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mohammed Adjei Sowah, has called for people who engaged in open defecation to be named and shamed.

According to him, the prosecution of such offenders who have made Ghana’s beaches their places of convenience seems not to be deterrent enough.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Thursday, Mr Adjei Sowah said his outfit had worked assiduously to ensure that every house has its own toilet facility to prevent open defecation.

He said with the support from the World Bank and the AMA, the cost of the toilet structure, which initially was GH¢4,000, has been reduced to GH¢1,100 for a concrete block toilet and GH¢600 for an aluminium structure.

The AMA boss also stated that landlords are allowed to make an initial deposit of GH¢150 for a concrete block toilet and GH¢100 for an aluminium structure but people still engage in open defecation.

The only way out, he stated is for chiefs, opinion leaders, media and the public to name and shame those who engage in the act.
