Okomfo Anokye would have killed over ‘ugly’ Otumfuo statue - Allotey Jacobs

Former Central Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Mr Bernard Allotey Jacobs has joined calls for the new statue of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to be pulled down.

He wondered which sculptor did such an “ugly image” of Otumfuo who is the “most handsome king in Africa.”

“Who did this to Otumfuo? Ah this amounts to ridicule and an anti-climax of his 20th anniversary celebration,” he stated on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem programme, Tuesday.

There was an outrage when President Nana Akufo-Addo unveiled the statue on Thursday, May 2, 2019. It has been positioned inside the new Kejetia market in Kumasi.

The statue of the Asante King immediately became the toast of social media trolls with many suspecting sabotage.

However, it has emerged that, the statue was erected by the Sculpture Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and supervised by the Municipal Chief Executive for Suame, Dr John Osei Bobie.

This even infuriated a lot of people who questioned the capabilities of the lecturers who supervised such a shoddy work.

Allotey Jacobs

In support, Mr Jacobs said those responsible should be thanking their stars for being alive.

“If this had happened in the era of Okomfo Anokye, those responsible would have been dead by now’,” he stated in Twi.

He suggested that the statue be pulled down for a more befitting one to be put up for the Asantehene.

Meanwhile, Members of the Kumasi Youth Association have said they will petition the Manhyia Palace over the erected statue of Asantehene positioned inside the multi-million-dollar Kumasi Kejetia Redevelopment project.

They argued that the statue does not resemble Otumfuo, therefore should not be positioned inside the Kejetia market.
