UEW Vice-Chancellor on a 'witch-hunt' – UTAG Prez alleges

Dr. Frimpong Kakyire Duku, President of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has accused the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Prof Anthony Afful-Broni of ‘witch-hunting’ some lecturers of the university.

Dr. Duku is alleging that the university’s Council has employed the tactic of silencing those with divergent views, hence his dismissal.

“I have always been critical of the Council so they knew when I became the UTAG President that I would be a thorn in their flesh that was why I was sacked,” he stated in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Tuesday.

Dr. Duku was dismissed by the university together with Professor Ephraim Avea Nsoh, Principal of the College of Language Education.

This was after he claimed the new governing council had not been formed after the old council was dissolved in 2017 due to change in government.

One of the charges against Dr. Duku was that he failed to exhaust the international mechanisms to get his grievances addressed.

But in a riposte, Dr. Duku maintained that he did not breach any internal regulation as mentioned in his letter of dismissal.

He noted that his only crime was to ensure the council followed due process in the interest of the university.

The UEW UTAG wondered why the Vice-Chancellor had the tacit support of the council when in fact the university had not been fully operational since His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo took over as President of the country.

Dr. Duku said he, together with other sacked lecturers, would seek legal redress for what he described as wrongful dismissal.
