Stephen Oduro not better than Richmond Lamptey – Former Kotoko defender

Former Kotoko left-back Eric Donkor has suggested that current Kotoko player Richmond Lamptey possesses qualities comparable to club legend Stephen Oduro.

In an exclusive interview with Akoma FM in Kumasi, Donkor argued that Ghana Premier League (GPL) players today have similar levels of quality to those who graced the league in previous years.

He contended that former players like Oduro gained prominence mainly due to their prolonged stay and consistent performance in the local league, rather than possessing inherently superior skills.

“We have quality players in the GPL who can match the quality of players like Stephen Oduro, Ishmael Addo, Opoku Nti, and others.

Richmond Lamptey a typical example, he is comparable to Stephen Oduro.

He asserted that while Lamptey exhibits considerable talent, his potential to attain legendary status in the Kotoko fraternity might be hindered by his likely departure from the club in the near future.

“People had loved for players like Malik Jabir, Stephen Oduro, and Charles Taylor and the rest because they played in our league for a longer period of time, and it is why their names are mentioned always However, no one can persuade me that the league is of low quality.

“The current GPL players are of high quality, but fans can’t get the opportunity to experience them for a longer period because they’re always leaving the country.

Stephen Oduro may be slightly ahead of Lamptey because Oduro played in the local league for a long time, but Lamptey’s future at Kotoko is uncertain at the moment and may likely leave depriving him the opportunity to become a household name.”

Meanwhile, Kotoko are currently 10th in the Ghana Premier League and would aim to finish strong with five matches to end the season.
