Man sets himself ablaze after failed attempt to kill wife

A man believed to be in his 50s reportedly set himself on fire after a failed attempt to harm his wife in Abeka, Greater Accra Region.

The incident took place in the early hours of Monday, May 6, 2024 around 3 am.

According to reports by Adom News, Collins Jones, the husband to a mother of three attacked her wife in her sleep around 3 am on Monday morning.

Martina Jones, wife of the man said her husband hit her with a pestle which he had hidden under their bed causing injuries to her forehead.

Narrating her distressing ordeal to Adom News, Martina said her husband then grabbed her neck and was strangling her to death as she gasped for breath.

With courage and determination, Martina forced her way from the deadly grip of her husband and fled the room.

She was further rescued by her neighbours upon reaching outside and was rushed to the hospital.

Sadly, Collins believed to be in his late 50s after realizing the tenacity of the crime he has committed, reportedly locked himself indoors and set himself on fire.

Although neighbours rushed to the scene to rescue him, he was critically injured and was rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Collins’ wife told Citi News in an interview that she is uncertain what may have propelled the attack as she had not wronged her husband.

“I have not wronged him in any way to warrant such an attack.

One of our children saw the pestle hidden under our bed and showed it to me.

I enquired where the pestle was from and he said it was placed there by his father.

“I asked what it was going to be used for and he said probably his father will be sending it to work.

When he hit me with the pestle at night, I wondered if the intention was to kill me so I struggled with him and managed to take the pestle from him.
