CAF Confederation Cup: Dreams dashed as Zamalek reach final

Dreams FC’s dream of reaching the final of the CAF Confederation Cup came to a disappointing end as they suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to Zamalek at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.

Hopes were high for Dreams FC to create history as the first Ghanaian side in the last two decades to reach the final.

However, it was Zamalek who asserted their dominance throughout the game, ultimately emerging victorious.

Tunisian defender Hamza Mathlouti opened the scoring for Zamalek in the 12th minute, capitalising on a precise pass from Zizo.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 27th minute, with Samson Akinyoola converting Mostafa Shalaby’s pass to extend their advantage.

Despite Dreams FC’s efforts, Zamalek maintained control, with Shalaby sealing the victory just before the hour mark.

The experience of the Egyptian side proved crucial in securing their place in the final.

Although Dreams FC held Zamalek to a goalless draw in the first leg, their opponents’ dominance in the second leg resulted in a 3-0 defeat.

Zamalek will now await the outcome of the other semi-final match between RS Berkane of Morocco and USM Alger from Algeria.

Despite the disappointment of exiting the tournament, Dreams FC can take pride in their remarkable journey as underdogs, defying expectations to reach the semi-finals.

Their preparations following their Ghana FA Cup victory last season have paid off, despite this being their first appearance in the competitive championship.

As Dreams FC now shift their focus to the Ghana Premier League, they exit the competition with deserving accolades, becoming the first Ghanaian side to reach the knockout stage of the competition in two decades.

The last time Ghanaian sides reached this stage was in 2004 when both Hearts of Oak and Kotoko reached the finals.

Although their dreams of reaching the final were dashed, Zito’s men concluded their campaign in style, leaving a lasting impression with their valiant efforts on the continental stage.
