ECG Senior Staff Union demands apology from Ashanti Regional Minister

The Chairman of the Ashanti East branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Senior Staff Union, Yussif Usman, has expressed disapproval of the recent arrest of the ECG Regional Manager by the Regional Minister.

He said ECG officials do not take instructions from the Minister, Mr Simon Osei-Mensah.

In an interview with Johnnie Hughes on 3FM Sunrise Morning Show, Usman emphasized the union’s stance, saying, “We’ve been told this morning, he will be holding a press conference, so we are calmly monitoring the situation.

We want the Minister to first of all understand that ECG, we don’t take instructions from him.”

His remarks came in response to the Minister’s claim that he ordered the arrest of the General Manager because he was not informed about disconnections.

Usman stated, “According to one of his statements, he said he ordered the arrest of our General Manager because he has told them whenever they want to disconnect any institution, he should be informed and we think that we cannot go by that, we don’t take instructions from him.”

The Union has outlined demands in response to the incident.

Usman explained, “Secondly, we want him to withdraw the case from the police station and then finally, he should apologize to the General Manager and the entire ECG fraternity and all Ghanaians.”

Regarding the Minister’s scheduled press conference and what they expect from him, Usman remarked, “The indication we had was that he’s having a press conference this morning.

So, until the press conference is over, and we know what you want to say, whether you want to address our issue or any other issue.

, but we hope that he will be a gentleman.

Since what he did was unnecessary and needless, we hope that he will apologize then we move on as one people.”

Usman also highlighted the impact of the incident on ECG staff morale, stating, “This is affecting the morale of the staff.
