Ghana’s African Games medalists yet to be paid

Ghanaian athletes who won medals at the 2023 African Games this year are yet to be paid the monies promised.

The games ended on March 23, 2024, with Ghana winning a record 68 medals.

It is the highest for the country in its history at the African Games.

Weightlifting contributed three medals including Winifred Ntumi who won the first gold medal for Ghana.

These Athletes were promised an amount of money.

However, they are yet to be paid and it’s affecting their training for subsequent competitions ahead of them.

“We have not received any money yet but we hope to get it soon.

I spoke with the leaders weeks ago and they assured me it’s in the pipeline and it will come.

“They promised us that gold is $3,000, silver is $2,000 and bronze is $1,000,” Weightlifting coach, Nii Darko Doodo said.

He added how the athletes have boycotted training due to the circumstance

“They don’t come to training as they used to because of the money but I keep encouraging them to come so that we will perform at the Commonwealth Games qualifiers.

“We are preparing for the Commonwealth Games, but we need to prepare else we won’t qualify,” he concluded.
