LGBTQ: You got Akufo-Addo totally wrong - Ex-MP chides Speaker

A former Member of Parliament has taken on the Speaker of Parliament, , for descending on over his comments on the anti-gay bill when US Vice President paid a courtesy call on him at the Presidency during the week.

President Akufo-Addo, in answering a question posed by a US journalist accompanying Kamala Harris, said Ghana had not yet passed an anti-LGBTQ law.

He, however, indicated that he will step in after the process ends in Parliament, which is currently studying the bill.

“It hasn’t been passed, so the statement that there is a legislation in Ghana to that effect is not accurate,” Mr Akufo-Addo corrected the journalist.

“Parliament is dealing with it and at the end of the process, I will come in.”

This had incensed the Speaker, who told the President to stay out of this because so far as he is concerned, he is in charge.

At a breakfast meeting with the Parliamentary Christian Fellowship on Tuesday, March 28, Mr Bagbin insisted that the President has no locus to come in now but will be forced to implement the dictates of the bill once it is passed.

However, speaking on TV3‘s The Keypoints on Saturday, April 1, former Tema East Member of Parliament (MP) Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover said the Speaker got the President totally wrong.

“[President Akufo-Addo] said he will come in after the whole process in Parliament,” he said.

“Mr Speaker, you totally got the President wrong.”

He also indicated that the current crop of MPs, so far as he knows, will not pass any law that will support homosexuality.
