Minority sees no ‘urgency’ in latest recall

Minority Chief Whip Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak says his colleagues see no urgency in the notice of summons issued by the Speaker of Parliament on Monday.

Speaker Aaron Mike Oquaye asked all 275 members to make it to the House on Thursday and Friday to consider an “urgent parliamentary business”.

“The Speaker of Parliament hereby direct that Parliament shall, notwithstanding anything to the contrary be recalled from the recess to sit on Thursday, the 26th day of April to Friday, the 27th day of April 2018,” the notice requested.

But speaking on TV3’s Midday Live on Tuesday, the Asawase Constituency Member said: “I don’t see the urgency in it”.

According to him, only the Majority side can tell the urgency in the recall.

Reports are that the recall will consider the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement as per a letter dated Tuesday, April 17, 2018 from the Chief Director of the Ministry of Trades and Industry, Ebenezer Padi Adjirackor.

But the Minority Chief Whip said as of Tuesday afternoon, “we don’t have copies of the agreement apart from the heading that was signed by Mr Speaker”.

He indicated that the clerk promised to make the Agreement available to members by close of Monday.

“I am looking forward that they will make copies available.”

Alhaji Muntaka expressed suspicion that the House may be surprised into considering another issue aside that on the Agreement.

“May be there are other things that we don’t know and they are keeping it to their chest.”
