EC's Limited Registration Exercise Was a Failure - Asiedu Nketia

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has described the recent limited registration exercise carried out by the Electoral Commission (EC) as a failure.

This is because, the EC failed to register even 50% of its intended total target.

Speaking on Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Abia' program, he disclosed that out of the One hundred thousand (100,000) targeted, only Forty seven thousand (47,000) Ghanaians which represent less than 50 percent, were registered.

To him, the EC needs to up their game under the new leadership to restore public confidence as the nation prepares for election 2020.

"The Electoral Commission blamed the low turn out on the biometric machines, but I wonder why that should form the basis of their excuse . . ."

"They must be seen to be up and doing and be more focused on what they are supposed to do. Election is just around the corner and we are all going to keep an eye on the activities of the EC," he added.

The Electoral Commission (EC) recently carried out a limited registration exercise in all the districts in the country which forms part of the proposed new regions to be created.

The exercise was aimed at providing an opportunity for those who have attained the age of 18 after the 2016 general election to register and those who have not had their names in the voters register since 2012 to also do so.

The 11-day exercise, which began on September 16, 2018, ended on September 25, 2018.

Raising some concerns at the Electoral Commission's IPAC meeting held Thursday 18th october, 2018, Mr. Asiedu Nketia explained that though the EC tried to defend the low turn out, it's explanation cannot be accepted adding that the "Electoral Commission should be neutral in its work in order to ensure a free and fair elections in 2020."
