UK meat producers seek business opportunities in Ghana’s meat industry

A trade delegation of meat producers and trading companies from the United Kingdom (UK) is in the country to seek opportunities for the export of meat products in Ghana’s meat industry.

Speaking at an event to welcome the delegation, British High Commissioner to Ghana Iain Walker said, “UK meat production is enjoyed all over the world. We have a world-class offer with a unique grass-based system, great livestock traditions, exemplary standards and highly effective supply chain. It will be great to see more of it served in Ghana to enrich the classic Ghanaian dishes.”

Mr Walker added that Britain’s exit from the European Union will not affect trade relations with Ghana.

He said, “I am very hopeful that after the Brexit both countries will continue to trade on positive terms. The interest of Ghana and the UK will be protected and our partnership builds on good foundations as we talk about the future and not the past”.

The Executive Director of the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce Adjoba Kyiamah said: “Our aim at the Chamber is to facilitate bilateral trade between the UK and Ghana in creating opportunities for local and global partnerships. This trade mission is an opportunity to showcase the value UK offers consumers of meat and other food products. It’s also a great opportunity for businesses to network.” 

The trade delegation which includes some of the best known and largest traders in meat in the UK is made up of nine companies and is led by Luis Garcia, a representative of the UK’s Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). 

Speaking at the event, Luis Garcia said: “For every challenge, there is an opportunity, especially in Africa. We hope this event will lead to very good networking opportunities between the organizations that we’ve brought and the local companies. We expect that those who made it tonight will extend their network to other local companies for future partnerships.”

The event brought together Ghanaian meat traders and importers, key representatives from all the relevant government ministries and agencies, trade partners and other relevant key stakeholders to interact with the UK delegations and possibly establish strong and long-standing relationships to necessitate growth in Ghana’s meat industry.
The 3-day trade mission is also to gain a thorough understanding of the local market conditions whilst scouting for business opportunities for the export of meat products specifically beef, lamb pork and offal to Ghana.
