Naa Koryoo Okunor wins NDC’s Awutu Senya East primaries

A private legal practitioner, Philis Naa Koryoo has won the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Awutu Senya East constituency.

Naa polled 505 votes against her closest contender, Alex Agbesi Aborgeh’s 251.

The other contenders for the parliamentary primaries were Kwaku Kangah Kesse who polled 199, Daniel Awer who polled 74 votes and Perez Laryea managing with only 6 votes.

Haruna Tetteh and Ebenezer Ofosu Yalley polled 98 and 30 votes respectively.

The Awutu Senya East constituency was part of the 23 constituencies across the country barred from holding primaries when the party organized its national parliamentary primaries in August 2019.

There were reports of some misunderstanding in the constituency for which reason the Central Regional Director of elections of the NDC, Mrs Gloria Koomson said in an earlier interview that “the party felt it was not safe to organise the elections” in that constituency.

But the constituency was cleared to hold the polls today, [Saturday October 19, 2019].

The Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo in an earlier interview said the unity of the party was paramount for the NDC’s victory in 2020 and called on all aspirants to unite after the polls.

Naa Koryoo will battle it out with the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson who is also the Minister for Special Development Initiatives, in the 2020 general elections.

Speaking to Citi News after the declaration of the result, Constituency Secretary of the NDC in Awutu Senya East, Tauriq Ahmadu indicated that the overall winner of the election is the NDC adding that parliamentary candidate Philis Naa Koryoo will ride on the good works of former President John Dramani Mahama to wrestle power from incumbent MP Mavis Hawa Koomson.

“What is the track record of Mavis Hawa Koomson in Awutu Senya East? None so what is she going to boast about? We have Naa Koryoo who is going to ride on the popularity of John Dramani Mahama,” the constituency secretary said.
