University of Ghana produces high standard graduates - Mexican Ambassador

Assertions about the premier tertiary institution; the university of Ghana made by CEO of Bulk Oil Distribution, Senyo Hosi on the production of half-baked graduates unfit for the corporate industry has created a chain of diverging views from stakeholders and alumni of the school.

Several parties have either condemned or patted the back of the BDC boss. In light of this however, Mexican Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister after paying a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor Prof. Ebenezer Danso Owusu indicated that graduates churned from the institution are of high standards although “We (Mexico) find very high standard of education both in vocational, technical, scientific research and also the humanities. This university has a Latin American study center and that is also something that is building the relationship in a very significant way”

He however admitted that there are issues with the capacity building which will also be addressed through the partnership with Mexico.

The University of Ghana ranked in 2018 by the Webometrics Ranking as the 16th best university in West Africa and ahead of all universities in Ghana in recent times has been named as hub for training mediocre graduates

Ambassador Julian Ventura is on a two-day visit in Ghana as part of plans to strengthen the bilateral relations that exist between the two nations. In meeting today with the Vice chancellor of the University, he said that Mexico is honoured to work with a prestigious and qualified Institution like the University of Ghana in a bid to bring academic education to a new level.

The Mexican government through their partnership with the University of Ghana is working to improve the food security of the country. This partnership with Ghana aims at improving the yields of some crops in the country such as corn.

In a bid to do more in the United Nation framework, both nations are working on climate change initiatives for the benefit of Africa and Latin America. The University of Ghana has been partnering with some Universities in Mexico for exchange programs that gives benefits to students from both nations. This helps in transmitting and improving academic excellence.

Background

CEO of Bulk Oil Distribution Senyo Hosi made headlines when he bashed his alma mater during the 70th anniversary over preparations and turned the heat on lecturers as well as graduates of the school.

“I have three degrees; all from the University of Ghana. I won’t hire anybody [from UG], it’s simple. And it’s a matter of substance: what do you churn out? You are churning out people with degrees, not people with an education, not people with skills on how to live; that is the problem.”

Some section of the public including professors and old students have condemned his actions. They claim that he generalized his opinion by degrading graduates from the University.

President of the University of Ghana chapter of the Graduate Students Association Ghana (GRASAG), Chris Atadika, together with a Political Science Lecturer at the University, Prof Ransford Yaw Gyampo and former GIMPA boss Professor Stephen Adei have publicly condemned claims made by Senyo Hosi.

We believe that management of the University will offer an official response to the hyperbolic statements made by Senyo Hosi. It will not come as a surprise if he issues an official apology to the University.

Professor Peter Quartey who was present when these remarks were made challenged the statements made by the CEO of Bulk Oil Distributors, Senyo Hosi.
